What are Stretch marks ?
Stretch marks are little tears on your skin, looking like soft scars. These are actually skin areas where the deep dermis has been damaged.At the beginning, they look like long purple reddish striae, and they are obviously inflammatory.The colour will gradually fade over the time, becoming white and shiny, almost of the same colour as your own skin.
Stretch marks are mainly located on the stomach, the breasts, the arms, the buttocks and the thighs.They sometimes appear during pregnancy, or during a sudden and consistent gain or loss of weight , or during puberty.
What are the causes of stretch marks?
Stretch marks could be of hormonal origin, especially appearing when there is a high level of steroid in the blood stream.
There are probably a combination of factors responsible for the stretch marks appearance such as skin stretching plus high level of steroid production plus sudden weight gain.
They mostly appear during big changes of body contours such as puberty or pregnancies.
They can also be the consequence of :
- Using steroid creams.
- Taking for a long time oral steroids as a treatment or for body builders , to gain some muscles.
- A very thin skin.
- Poor hygiene and poor skin care.
Different types of stretch marks
White/silver stretch marks
The oldest stretch marks tend to get a white or silver colour over the time. When they have reached that stage, the blood supply has reduced and collagen fibers get disorganised or simply disappear. White stretch marks have the reputation of being more resistant to treatment , which is not what we observed when using our Dermomask treatment.
